Comparison of the SUPG and a DG method applied to the level set equation

Dipl.-Math. Eva Loch (IGPM, RWTH Aachen)

Abstract:

The level set method is a widely used interface capturing method. It is, for instance, used
to detect the moving interface in multi phase ?ow problems and in combustion problems. In
this talk we compare two possible ?nite element discretizations of the level set equation, the
SUPG method and a DG method, with respect to the discretization error, the interface error
and computational aspects. In case of the SUPG-method a discretization error bound can be
found in the literature. We derived an analogous result for the DG-method. Furthermore we
derived an upper bound for the interface error for both methods. For a simple test case the
discretization error and the interface error are computed. Furthermore, both discretization
methods for the level set equation are used to compute a rising butanol droplet with the
software package DROPS.
