Quasi-stationary states of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation
Dr. Margaret Beck (Heriot-Watt University)
Abstract:
The dynamics of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equati-
on has two key stages: rapid convergence to certain quasi-stationary states, and
then the slow evolution of these states as the fluid relaxes to its rest state. We
provide a mathematical explanation for these multiple time scales by studying a
certain family of quasi-stationary states, known as bars and dipoles, using techni-
ques from the theory of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems and hypocoercive
operators.
