The Willmore functional on isometric immersions

Abstract: In this talk we present some results about the (generalised) Kirchhoff plate functional
from nonlinear elasticity. This functional is obtained by restricting the classical
Willmore functional to the class of isometric immersions of a fixed 'reference' Riemannian
manifold.
We will present a general framework to study such functionals, and we will construct a
'reference' metric whose associated Kirchhoff functional admits infinitely many stationary
points.
