About the modelling of complex free-surface flows with Saint-Venant equations

Dr. Sebastien Boyaval (Université Paris Est)

Abstract:
Saint-Venant ``shallow water'' equations have been used for more than one century to model numerous free-surface flows of fluids like water. They are particularly useful to hydraulic engineering for the simulation of lakes and rivers.

After recalling the physical and mathematical frameworks that make Saint-Venant equations a sensible model, we will show how to extend the latter to model complex free-surface flows such as for non-Newtonian fluids.

A numerical method based on a finite-volume discretization will be presented, which allows one to simulate various generalized Saint-Venant equations with one single tool, and thereby allows one to easily analyze their specific features in keeping with the enriched physics.
